Stage 1.3 · Grammar in Context

Erik gives advice to a colleague

Read the short text. Then answer the three comprehension questions below.

My colleague had a problem with a machine, so I gave him some advice. "You should check the temperature sensor first," I said. "And you could replace the old component." He wasn't sure, so I made a suggestion: "Why don't we test it together?" He agreed. "How about tomorrow morning?" I asked. "Good idea," he said. "Let's start early." In the end, we found a good solution. Sometimes the best advice is simple: don't panic, and check one thing at a time.

Q1.What advice did he give first?

A) Replace the component B) Check the temperature sensor C) Call the supplier

Q2.What did he suggest doing together?

A) Testing the machine B) Buying a new one C) Waiting

Q3.When did they agree to start?

A) Tomorrow afternoon B) Tomorrow morning C) Next week

Stage 1.4 · Grammar Tip

Giving advice and making suggestions

Keep this table handy. Notice the different structures: bare infinitive after should/could/Let's, and verb + -ing after "How about".

Use	Structure	Example
Advice	You should + base verb	`"You should check the sensor."`
Softer suggestion	You could + base verb	`"You could try a new part."`
Suggest to the group	Why don't we + base verb?	`"Why don't we test it?"`
Suggest with -ing	How about + verb-ing?	`"How about testing it tomorrow?"`
Suggest together	Let's + base verb	`"Let's start early."`
Agree	Good idea / I agree	`"Good idea. Let's do it."`

Stage 1.3 · Grammar in Context

Speaking without preparation

Read the short text. Then answer the three comprehension questions below.

In a real conversation, you don't have time to prepare. Someone asks a question, and you must answer. What do you do? First, don't panic. You can use fillers like "Well..." or "Let me think" to buy a little time. If you don't understand, just say "Sorry, could you repeat that?" If you can't find a word, say "How can I say..." and describe it. It's okay to be unsure — you can say "I'm not sure, but I think...". The most important thing is to keep talking. Fluency is not about being perfect; it's about keeping the conversation going.

Q1.What can you use to buy time?

A) Fillers like 'Well' B) A dictionary C) Silence

Q2.What do you say if you don't understand?

A) Nothing B) Sorry, could you repeat that? C) Goodbye

Q3.Fluency is about...?

A) being perfect B) keeping the conversation going C) speaking fast

Stage 1.4 · Grammar Tip

Fluency toolkit — keep talking

Keep this table handy. These phrases buy you time, ask for clarification, search for words, hedge when uncertain, and return to the topic.

Use	Phrase	Example

Ask to repeat	Sorry, could you repeat that?	when you didn't hear
Ask meaning	What do you mean?	when you don't understand

Hedge	I'm not sure, but...	when uncertain
Return	Anyway...	after a pause

Never say · common silence traps

[silence]→use "Well..."

[give up on word]→"How can I say... it's a kind of..."
[long silence]→"Let me think for a second."

What do you exactly?

Stage 2 · Sentence Ordering

Erik's full integrated day

Read the full integrated day. Notice how every skill from the course appears in one connected performance.

Good morning! Let me introduce myself. I'm Erik, an electrical engineer from São Carlos. I usually start work at 8 and check the machines. Yesterday, I fixed a fault in the cooling system. Next month, I'm going to travel to China again, because we have a new project. Shanghai is bigger and more modern than my city. I have a lot of experience — I've been there three times. When a machine breaks, I explain the problem and suggest a solution: "Why don't we replace the component?" If I don't understand someone, I say, "Sorry, could you repeat that?" That's my English — not perfect, but it works.

Q1.What is Erik's job?

A) Manager B) Electrical engineer C) Pilot

Q2.Why is he going to China?

A) For a holiday B) For a new project C) To study

Q3.What does he say when he doesn't understand?
